An Introduction to Rainbow of Hong Kong

Rainbow of Hong Kong was founded on World AIDS Day, 1st December, 1998.  We are a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organization concerned with the quality of life in the LGBT community.  Rainbow of Hong Kong founded and operates the only LGBT Community Centre in Hong Kong.

Our Objectives:

  1. To promote equal opportunities and sex education.
  2. To broaden the living perspectives of grassroot communities and to improve their quality of life.
  3. To assist volunteers in their initiatives to organize and provide diverse services and activities in response to community needs.

Rainbow of Hong Kong currently has over 1000 registered members. About 200 people visit the centre every week.  With the efforts of its volunteer teams, Rainbow of Hong Kong conducts over 100 activities every year including weekly discussion groups, art, picnics, sports, camping, advocacy and a music concert, etc.   Services provided include blood testing, counseling, a hotline, education, outreach and HIV prevention etc.

Our Advocacy
Rainbow of Hong Kong has a long history of advocating for the rights of sexual minorities. Its influence has been reported in Newsweek Magazine, September, 2001 and on the BBC News, March, 2002.
With the only LGBT Community Centre in Hong Kong, Rainbow of Hong Kong has become a major resource supporting queer movements, coalition meetings often happen in the centre, Hong Kong Pride, International Day Against Homophobia HK Parade and For My Colours to name a few.

A Diversity within the Community
In the spirit of the Rainbow Flag, Rainbow of Hong Kong is involved in a wide spectrum of social issues in the LGBT community.  Independent organizations such as the Women’s Coalition of Hong Kong (A lesbian and women sexual minority organization) and CD Family (A transgender organization) have gatherings at the Center regularly.  Rainbow of Hong Kong, is home to a broad collection of subgroups, such as Teenagers and Student groups, Mature Guys, Bears, BDSM People, Bisexuals, People Living with HIV, Queers with Disabilities and Christian LGBT’s etc.

Our Unique Library
At our LGBT Community Centre, we maintain a unique Queer Library, created for the purpose of strengthening queer culture.  Queer, AIDS literature and information from around the world is provided here to our many visitors which include people from the LGBT communities, students, teachers, social workers, parents, guests from overseas and members of the general public.

Working with Students
Rainbow of Hong Kong has a well known reputation in the Social Services field.  For the last two years, Rainbow of Hong Kong has partnered with the Departments of Social Science and Social Work at the Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, providing an operating venue for Intern and Placement Students to study sexual orientation issues in the field while concurrently fulfilling their course requirements at their university.

Every month, representatives from Rainbow of Hong Kong are invited to give speeches and workshops at different universities in Hong Kong.  We also receive calls from high school to university students requesting interviews and referrals for their homework, school projects and thesis.

Interaction with Overseas Organizations
We frequently receive visitors from China, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, U.S.A., U.K and Russia etc.  When we meet with guests from sister organizations in other countries, exchanging information provides a mutual resource of ideas for improving our services.  This is one way we keep our services updated to better serve the community, locally and globally.

In the past two years, members of Queer and AIDS organizations from China have visited our Community Centre frequently, receiving instruction and training on organizing and providing services.

Rainbow of Hong Kong along with its volunteer team strive to provide services for building a stronger community and fight for equal rights.  Donations are needed to meet these goals.  Working together and contributing ourselves to better the future of the community.
